The purpose of this Shadow PC experiment is to help junior researchers in
Asia to improve their research through practicing the paper selection
process of a highly competitive conference like MobiCom. The participants
will learn the criteria that characterize a good MobiCom paper and improve
their own topic selection and paper writing.
Shadow PC will mimic the actual MobiCom Program Committee.
It will review the same or a
smaller set of papers,
hold a PC meeting, and make paper selection just like
the real Program Committee,
but it has
NO IMPACT
on the actual PC decisions;
the real MobiCom Program Committee will not know which papers have
also been submitted to the Shadow PC,
and the decisions of the Shadow PC will not be revealed to the
real MobiCom PC while making the real paper selection
decisions for MobiCom.
Further, the Shadow PC will adhere to the
same confidentiality requirements as apply to the real Program Committee.
Why do you want to opt-in to have your papers reviewed by Shadow PC?
- Addition reviews and feedbacks
- Different opinions and different perspectives from different backgrounds
(from different regions, junior researchers vs more experienced reviewers)
- More transparent review process (Shadow PC includes people outside the
inner core of MobiCom)
- Double check to see if some quality material was systematically missed
by actual TPC

Benefits to Shadow PC Members |
 |
 |
Why should you volunteer to do rigorous
review that doesn't count?
- Get to know how a PC is run, learn the experience of paper selection
- Get to know other PC members and peers (networking)
- Get to read top notch paper and give feedbacks
- Get to see both good and bad papers and see how they are viewed by
others (help calibrate overall expectations)
- Learn how to think about what aspects make a paper a good one, what
aspects make a paper a bad one, and what aspects have to be addressed to get
in a highly selective conference
- Opportunity to be selected for real Program Committee
in the future (if you provide
high quality reviews)!

Criteria for Shadow PC Members |
 |
 |
- Young researchers who are solid in the foundation of their research
area, probably at the assistant professor level.
- Who already have some experiences in reviewing papers, but never yet
been in the Program Committee of
conferences such as MobiCom, SIGCOMM, and INFOCOM.
- We will ask different universities and institutes in Asia to nominate
possible participants.
