Dinner at the Great Wall of China
The Great Wall at Juyongguan
After the last paper session on Wednesday, September 23,
we will leave the MobiCom conference hotel by bus
for the Great Wall of China at Juyongguan (Juyong Pass),
where we will have the conference dinner banquet.
This section of the Great Wall is about 47 kilometers (29 miles)
from the conference hotel.
The Great Wall of China,
stretching over many thousands of miles,
was originally created after the unification of China
in the third century BC
by China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.
During the Qin Dynasty (221 to 206 BC),
the Great Wall of China was created by
connecting and extending a series of old fortification walls
constructed during the Warring States Period (403 to 221 BC)
of Chinese history,
to form a continuous wall as a defense against invading tribes.
The Great Wall was further extended, rebuilt, and enhanced
during succeeding Dynasties, with
much of what remains of the Wall
built during the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644).
The Wall is one of the great wonders of the world
and was enlisted as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1987.
In Chinese,
the Wall is known as
"Wan-Li Qang-Qeng",
which means
10,000-Li Long Wall
(10,000 Li is equal to about 5,000 km).
Juyongguan, one of the most renowned passes of the Great Wall,
is a national cultural protection unit of China
and is the most recently restored part of the Wall.
Throughout history,
the pass has been an important military stronghold,
situated in a valley surrounded by mountains.
The pass is also a beautiful scenic spot,
with beautiful flowers and lush trees covering the mountains
around the pass.
The conference dinner banquet will take place in the evening,
just in front of the Northern Gate,
part of the Great Wall at Juyongguan, as shown below:
At night, it's a bit cold at the pass,
so we recommend you bring a coat with you,
in addition to comfortable shoes for walking and climbing.
